In a year marked by rising unemployment, a struggling economy and two ongoing wars, some on the beach said this year was as important as any to celebrate Independence Day. More than 20,000 people gathered on the beach in Naples. In all, about 1,250 shells were fired into the night sky in about 30 minutes starting around 9 p.m. “America, I’m very proud of it,” Julie Chambers said. “I like to show off that I’m an American.”
