Burke: Girls join the game, and the play gets rough
A distinct blend of sweetness and ferocity emanates from teenage girls who play competitive sports. Sure, they hug, giggle and flip their ponytails. However, when the ball is in play, they sweat just like the boys and their expressions reflect their resolve to be the first to the ball, to win, and they push hard to make it happen. In the heat of the game they are not their gender, they are simply athletes.

MCCAIN IS RIGHT: I was moved by John McCain’s acceptance speech, and agree with him that the Republican Party has lost its moral bearings, and it’s time for a change in Washington. Thus, I will be proudly casting my vote this November for the true candidates of change — Obama and Biden.

Krauthammer: Palin casts a spell — but will it hold?
"There are two questions we will never have to ask ourselves, ‘Who is this man?' and ‘Can we trust this man with the presidency?' "

Thomasson: The GOP's ‘hockey mom' is a contender
The Democrats now know they have their hands full with Sarah Palin. If there was any doubt that the self-proclaimed "hockey mom" governor of Alaska could hold her own in the national political arena, it was dispelled by her performance at the Republican National Convention.

>As an automobile driver, I shall endure the 120 hours of the Cypress Avenue Bridge closure with annoyance. If, however, I were a pedestrian, bicyclist, or user of an electric scooter type wheelchair, I would be very concerned that there is, in actuality, only one greatly extended route to get across a river that connects many people from the east to churches, medical centers, the library, and those from the west to vet care, shops and fast food.

A one-sided question: Why is it that when a woman, who is also a mother, runs for political office, people question who will care for her children? I have not heard anyone questioning a man, who happens to be running for political office, who will care for his children.

I am a member of a small and not wealthy church in Lakehead. We have stairs that are crumbling from age and we had hoped to replace them with a wheelchair ramp using labor from our congregation.

It’s time to move foward on clean energy sources
I have lived in Shasta County for nearly 30 years with the last 15 years in Burney. As a business owner and a very active member of the Burney community, I come in contact with hundreds of people every week. The most discussed issue of late has been the proposed windmill project on Hatchet Ridge.
