“Ike will be a major hurricane that will pose a serious threat to St. Lucie County,” said County Administrator Doug Anderson, adding that the impact the storm will have on the area still isn’t known because “the weather keeps changing.” However, residents need to be prepared for the worst.

Because the deadline to put a question on the Nov. 4 ballot was Sept. 3, St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker said a special election or the city’s 2009 election are the only options for a referendum. A special election would cost the city about $23,000, she said.

The developer of the city’s new downtown area has until the beginning of October to pay a $250,000 contribution for construction of the new Civic Center — or the entire City Center project could be in jeopardy.
