Water being released slowly from Lake Okeechobee as Hurricane Ike looms
According to Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Barry Vorse, the South Florida Water Management District has filed a request for a pre-storm draw down of some of the major canals located south of Lake Okeechobee. Tropical Storm Hanna, although there was no direct hit on Florida, dropped 4.4 inches of rain on the Everglades Agricultural Area basin adjacent to the southeast corner of the Lake Okeechobee.

St. Lucie officials: Ike may bring flooding; some residents may want to evacuate
“Ike will be a major hurricane that will pose a serious threat to St. Lucie County,” said County Administrator Doug Anderson, adding that the impact the storm will have on the area still isn’t known because “the weather keeps changing.” However, residents need to be prepared for the worst.

Fort Pierce city commissioner pushes for utility referendum
Because the deadline to put a question on the Nov. 4 ballot was Sept. 3, St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker said a special election or the city’s 2009 election are the only options for a referendum. A special election would cost the city about $23,000, she said.
