VeraSun's woes are costing farmers big

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) _ Richard Guse says he has a half-dozen contracts to sell corn to VeraSun Energy Corp., and he hands to lose a lot of money if the struggling ethanol maker breaks them.

"I'm going to say my potential loss is $200,000 to $300,000," the southern Minnesota farmer said.

VeraSun has built two ethanol plants in southern Minnesota, near Janesville and Welcome. Neither has produced a gallon of ethanol.

But in the months before the Sioux Falls, S.D.-based company's Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing Oct. 31, VeraSun laid the groundwork for starting production by contracting with local farmers for millions of bushels of corn.
