Pros and cons of immigration

Several years ago, Terry Gorman began to think there was an opinion gap on the volatile issue of illegal immigration.
Leaders in the business and political communities, Gorman says, did not appreciate the anger among average citizens over the issue of people entering the United States illegally, working illegally and having children who automatically become U.S. citizens.
"I think there is a huge disconnect between how average people feel about this and the politicians and leaders of many groups," says Gorman, a retired U.S. postal worker. "You go to the State House hearings and testify and it seems all the (media) coverage comes down on the side of ... the ACLU, the Urban League, and the Latino organizations.
"I'm not against immigrants, we need immigrants," Gorman says. "But you have to come here legally."
In February 2006, Gorman started a lobbying and research group, Rhode Island Immigration Law Enforcement, with six members. Roughly a year later, the group has more than 250 members, a Web site and a presence at the State House lobbying for legislation that would crack down on employers who hire illegal immigrants.
On the other side is Bill Shuey, executive director of the International Institute of Rhode Island, an organization that helps immigrants and teaches them English.
"Obviously you can't let everybody in here who wants to come," Shuey said. "But I think we want to deal with people who have been here a long time in a humane manner. We need to have a policy in which there is some ... path to citizenship."
The modern controversy over immigration probably dates to 1994, when California voters overwhelmingly approved a ballot question called Proposition 187, a measure that would have denied most public services, including health care and education, to illegal immigrants.
The courts stuck down most of Proposition 187, but it kicked off a debate in the western and southwestern states _ which share porous borders with Mexico _ that has since rippled across the nation, reaching into state houses and the halls of Congress.
The volume has been turned up on the argument in Southeastern New England since the March 6 raid by federal authorities on a textile factory that employed 300 or more illegal immigrants. A probable-cause hearing against officers of the company, Michael Bianco Inc., is on April 6.
Frustrated by what they view as a lack of aggressiveness by the federal government, legislators in states around the country want states to get into a sphere of law enforcement that has long been Washington's job _ punishing employers who hire illegal immigrant workers.
While some immigrant advocates, such as Shuey, see an element of racism in the anti-immigrant campaign _ current illegal immigrants are largely Hispanic _ others, including some academics who have studied the issue, believe opposition to illegal workers is based on economics.
Peter Skerry, a Boston College political science professor and expert on immigration, says it is too easy to argue that racism is behind most of the recent anti-immigrant fervor.
Skerry and other researchers see an economy that has not created jobs for low-skilled Americans and where stagnant wages have been the norm for 25 years for lower-income workers. "Anxieties about immigration are not easily dismissed as irrational or racist," he says.
"Economists agree that the owners of capital, business entrepreneurs, and well-educated professionals benefit overwhelmingly from immigration," Skerry says. "While many ordinary Americans see immigrants as potential competitors for jobs, neighborhood turf, or public resources, the wealthy and merely affluent see them as employees _ the nannies, gardeners, dishwashers, maids and laborers who help to get things done."
Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., said, "Our first obligation is to secure the border. And we need to enforce vigorously responsibility of employers to hire legal workers."
But the issue is complicated, especially when it comes to guest-worker programs _ which would allow immigrants into the country for short periods _ and even more pointedly, how to deal with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants living in the United States.
For instance, large agricultural interests argue that they need short-term seasonal workers. "The agricultural interests claim they can't put food on American tables without access to foreign workers," Reed says.
Reed says he appreciates the "issue of fairness" _ that illegal immigrants should not be able to cut in the citizenship line _ but also says that most illegal immigrants are here to work.

illegal aliens
First and formost the word immigrant is not interchangeable with illegal alien. Please look up the definitions of these terms and stop calling them immigrants. You may call them illegal visitors, illegal entrants, illegal possums for all I care, but the main point of any discussion about these people is that they are aliens to our country and they are illegal.
<<>>> erm here is a no brainer. How about they use the agricultural guest worker program that is already in place? Ahhhh they refuse to use it because they have to pay a decent wage to the workers instead of exploiting them.
illegals
sorry, it took the quote out of the first post, it should have read like this

wow..aliens ? wtf ?!
Just to let everyone know, that in my opinion, immigrants should not be called aliens because theyre not.
immigrants should have the rights everyone has..!
i also agree that immigrants should not be called aliens. They didn't come down here to mess around, but to do serious stuff with their life. They work & they still pay what they have to pay. i think that any immigrant should have rights like evryone does. We are all humans, so why should be treat them like if THEY werent??
immigrants should have the
immigrants should have the right to stay here!!!!
i want to know what Lilathe means by..
Immigrants refuse to use what ??
the agriculteral guest program ??
because they have to pay a "SMALL" wage??
wtf do you mean a small wage ??
maybe since they barley came here they dont have that kind of money yet..duh !!
if you were smart enough (which you obviosly aren't) i think you would have thought of that instead of judging them.
And i think that if you have such a big problem with them not being able to pay the "SMALL" wage then you should get the money you have been saving and pay for it your self !!
elizabeth and your mom
i think that Elizabeth and..'your mom' lol
are right.
totally agree
i totally agree with beverleigh!!
i have no idea what lilathe is talking about..?
illegal Aliens
They maybe illegal but who do you think does all the dirty work for all everyone else who does not want to do it. If you are to call them illegal aliens its like calling every caucasian person who goes to Mexico for vacation or for retirement. I think if you want to make all the illegal immigrants legal to be in the U.S. then all the people who go to Mexico should also try to become legal there, it's the same thing as an illegal immigrant coming to the U.S. as a caucasion going to Mexico.
Illegal immigrants ARE aliens
According to my documentation...illegal immigrants do not have any papers to prove that they are from the U.S. They just sneak into our country and think that they rule everything...but you believe what you do and I'll believe what I do. They are over populating our country and this NEEDS to stop!
thats not fair
how dare you think you are better than illegals really everyone in the u.s. ecsept the indains are immigrants because what if your family wouldn't have came to the u.s. and you came you would be an illegal immigrant
who the hell do you think
who the hell do you think you are to be saying that about immigrants you probaly need to leave the US because without us immigrants you are nothing!!
Aliens???
Aliens???... " they are populating OUR country and this need to stop"! wow...your country???? unless you are a native american or a Mexican...you are correct..but i don't think so. You have to remember that this country was created by IMMIGRANTS...unfortunately...there is still a a lot of ignorance in this country and many people is too blid to see and accept things... " but you believe what you do and I'll believe what I do" because of this many people like you can not fix or solve anything, it time to leave sterotypes and start thinking like if you were in their shoes... like your ancestors were once...
How much did you pay to buy this country??? to make it yours??
>>>
imagrints yes alieans no
Firt of all you should be
Firt of all you should be the one looking stuff up on the dictionary...
