A.S.P. -- After Sarah Palin

Remember the Democratic National Convention? The Clintons and the Obamas, Invesco Field, the fireworks?

No, I thought not. It's so last month. So B.S.P. -- Before Sarah Palin. Before Hurricane Gustav and his pals. Before the GOP rediscovered how satisfying it is to bash the news media, liberals and East Coast elites.

And that's a problem for the Democrats.

Last week's Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn., has re-energized the party and John McCain's presidential campaign. It wasn't just the convention's late timing or its retro, culture-war theme that reinvigorated Republican hopes. It was the power of Palin.

McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate electrified social conservatives. Many told me they'd originally backed former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee or former Gov. Mike Huckabee of Arkansas. They'd been lukewarm toward McCain, supporting him mostly out of a sense of duty. Then, he chose Palin.

"Smartest thing McCain ever did!" said Steve Millspaugh, chairman of the Custer County, Okla., Republican Party. His wife, Rose, agreed. She -- like Palin -- is a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association.

While McCain may have hoped to win women who voted for Hillary Clinton, that seems less likely than that Palin will attract conservative Democratic men -- like the retired Marine who called Millspaugh to talk about McCain.

Back in Denver, Democrats happily tied McCain to President Bush, warning McCain would continue the Bush policies Americans hate. Only a week later, though, Palin, who is known as a reformer, made McCain's promises of reform more salient.

Plus, the convention worked to induce a form of mass amnesia about who has occupied the Oval Office for the last eight years. Mother Nature helped. After Gustav forced Bush to stay in Washington and speak by satellite, he was hardly mentioned again. Vice President Cheney, also scheduled to speak, found pressing business in Ajerbaijan.

Curiously, the Republicans, after complaining that Obama is a celebrity, created a cult of personality around Palin, 44, a moose-hunting hockey mom with five children. Her hockey mom joke: What's the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.

In her national debut, Palin delivered her speech lines well, managing to be tough but not strident, sarcastic but not shrill. She set the tone for the fall campaign:

"I've learned quickly these past few days that if you're not a member in good standing of the Washington elite, then some in the media consider a candidate unqualified for that reason alone," she said.

GOP speakers contended that questions about Palin's qualifications were out of line, that her 20 months as governor was more executive experience than Sen. Barack Obama or his running mate, Sen. Joe Biden.

Nice try, but former Bush political guru Karl Rove on "Face the Nation" last month knocked Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine of Virginia for his inexperience when Kaine was thought a frontrunner as Obama's running mate.

Kaine, Rove said, has "been a governor for three years. He's been able, but undistinguished. I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done. He was mayor of the 105th-largest city in America. And, again, with all due respect to Richmond, Va.; it's smaller than Chula Vista, Calif.; Aurora, Colo.; Mesa or Gilbert, Ariz.; North Las Vegas, or Henderson, Nev. It's not a big town.

"If he were to pick Governor Kaine, it would be an intensely political choice, where he's said, 'You know what? I'm really not first and foremost concerned with, is this person capable of being president of the United States?'" Rove said.

Palin has less than two years' experience as governor and was mayor of a town a fraction of the size of Richmond.

None of that sort of criticism worried her fans at the convention. Palin has been briefed on the issues, and they're confident she can hold her own against Obama and Biden. Besides, they know where she stands on the issues that matter to them.

Whatever happens Nov. 4, Sarah Palin, a pit bull with lipstick, likely will be gnawing on Democrats -- and delighting Republicans -- for the next four years.

Rove was right concerning

Rove was right concerning Kaine "I don't think people could really name a big, important thing that he's done". This is not true of Palin.

There is an impressive list of accomplishments from her time on the ethics panels - as well as her "take on the party establishment" mentality before and after becoming governor. She actually DOES HAVE foreign policy experience as she has had to deal with the bordering countries of Canada & Russia.

Nice try, but Palin makes Kaine look like a piker too - right alongside Obama.

Obama, the community organizer

Palin did a great job of blowing up the media's lie that Governor Palin is not qualified to be VP. That was a bad move because she has more elected executive experience than the Democrats' Presidential nominee. Americans know Governors are considered qualifed to be Presidents. They elected Reagan and Carter! This little witch hunt against Palin just blew up in the Obama media's face. He's been mortally wounded by their stupidity.

Experience Doing What?

Barack Obama hasn't lived in a cave for the last 47 years, he's been doing something, it's just that what's he been doing doesn't tell us much about what he will do if he gets elected President. Biden's supposedly experienced too, he's been around forever but I can't tell you a single thing he's responsible for accomplishing and I'm a fairly close follower of politics. Some people get more done in a day than some people do in a week, more in a week than others do in a month and so on. It's not how many minutes you spend on the floor that counts, it's how many points you scored while you were out there.

I'll bet Sarah and family

I'll bet Sarah and family eat what they kill. Have you had your minimum recommended dose of human fetus today Marcia?

No one said you can't question her qualifications

"Cult of celebrity" I don't think so. That comes straight out of your peoples dictionary, the Media.
Who wants to be the person on the end of the battering ram YOU the media rammed into her family.
No one said that any media personality, (which is what they are "personalties", not reporters anymore) no one said asking legitimate political questions is off base, but asking for samples of amniotic fluid?, attacking her daughter, 4 stories on the front page of the NYT in one day about her pregnant daughter? Is that what you call asking relevant questions? I am sick of hearing shrills for the media whining that it is their job to ask the hard questions "boo hoo they are being unfair and mean, we are just doing our job" You aren't doing your job. Sure guys when it suits you, why no John Edwards story, why no Bill Ayers, Chicago Annenberg Challenge, or al-Mansour helping Obama out stories?? Your own double standard is why we HATE and distrust you.
Your treating us like we are stupid and don't notice you are in love with Obama and literally worship him. Even your goddess Oprah won't interview Palin. Oprah who openly endorsed Obama, had him on her show twice and is a powerful women who worked her way to the top. What a disappointment.
You are going to choke now on your own smugness and disdain for all the stupid people you talk down to and make fun of. Even someone I liked was revealed to be a jerk this week, Peggy Noonan. No wonder we despise the media. You have given us a million reasons to not trust you.

Media learned everything they know from YOUR REPUBLICANS !

There has been more lies, corruption and smugness in the republican party than in any American party Ever! It is embarrassing how much has been done to degrade our country and the American people by this administration ! You are being hoodwinked every day. You are fed full of lies on a regular basis and you are too dumb to realize it. You need an education and then maybe you can talk about it, when you are. If you do not get education or health care as an American you are getting less than most of the European countries have given their people for 20 yrs. You are voting for people who want to keep you STUPID So they can CONTROL you !
